Summer Action Along the Grass Flats and Mangroves

Inshore fishing in Crystal River is heating up as we head into the heart of summer. With water temps in the mid-80s and steady tides, anglers are enjoying consistent action across the flats, mangrove shorelines, and oyster bars. Redfish are schooling up nicely on the incoming tide, especially around grassy points and rocky shorelines. Early mornings and late afternoons are your best bet, with topwater lures drawing aggressive strikes near dawn.

Speckled sea trout are holding in 3–5 feet of water over grassy bottom, with soft plastics and live shrimp under popping corks producing solid numbers. The trout bite has been especially active on moving water. Snook are starting to move into their summer patterns, hanging near mangrove edges and creek mouths where current and shade offer ambush opportunities. Light tackle with live pilchards or pinfish is your best approach. Expect occasional run-ins with flounder and mangrove snapper as well—both are being caught near structure and deeper cuts.

Whether you're sight-casting reds on the flats or drifting for trout in open bays, now’s a great time to fish Crystal River’s inshore waters. The fish are feeding, the scenery is stunning, and the variety of species keeps every trip exciting.

<div>Hey Everyone! &nbsp;With the Scallop Stampede rapidly approaching (July 1st-Sept. 24 in Citrus County), I thought I’d take a moment to cover your pre-season checklist to set you up for success on the grass flats! &nbsp;</div><div>1.) &nbsp;First and foremost, unless you are hiring a guide, you MUST have a FL Saltwater Fishing License to harvest scallops. &nbsp;This applies to everyone over the age of 16. Don’t get caught scalloping without one, BIG FINE. &nbsp;www.myfwc.com to obtain yours!&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>2.) &nbsp;Although not mandatory, I highly recommend that you invest in a quality mask, fins and snorkel. &nbsp; Practice in a pool before your trip. &nbsp; Using this gear comfortably can make a HUGE difference in your scalloping success! &nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>3.). &nbsp;Purchase and Display a “Diver Down” flag from the highest point of your vessel. &nbsp;It’s the law. &nbsp;Other boats MUST slow to idle speed within a 300ft radius of a flag. &nbsp;Keep an air horn aboard to remind other boaters of this rule. And use liberally! &nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>4.) Rainbow River snorkeling trips (Dunnellon) and all Levy County locations (Inglis and Yankeetown) are well within our operating area.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Am I able to do a scalloping charter and a half day fishing charter on the same day?</strong></p><p>Yes! During Crystal River scalloping season we offer a special charter that includes half a day of fishing and half a day of scalloping. This way you can get the best of both worlds! Contact us today if&nbsp;you are interested in this option!</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Do you only offer half or full day fishing charters?</strong></p><p>Although we suggest half day (4 hour) or full day (8 hour) fishing charters, we understand that everyone's needs and preferences are different.
